2010 Business Checklist
Research shows that many business owners
are not TRUE entrepreneurs. They are skilled experts in a
particular technology, service, industry, trade or process and they work
IN their business rather than running their business. Check the
results of your responses to the statements below. Are your
results those of a TRUE entrepreneur or those of a skilled subject
matter expert?
I have cash flow
issues.
I have profit challenges.
I have a successful business but it could use some “fine tuning”.
I have some good ideas for the business but can't find the time to implement them.
I’d like to get an objective opinion about the way my business is run.
I have an aggressive vision for the business, but I’m not sure how to get there.
My organizational structure just evolved. It wasn’t the result of any well thought out plan.
I wish I had a trusted resource I could call for business advice.
My business has some ongoing problems that continue to challenge me.
I’m much better at the “technical side” of my business than I am at the business management or leadership part.
My business is growing too fast for my current skills. I’m working extra hours and I’m stressed.
I am so busy working “in” my business that I’m not taking the time to work “on” my business.
We don’t have a very good Human Resource system in place, no job descriptions, employee handbook or accurate tracking of vacation, sick and personal days.
I have upgraded our computers, software, office space, furniture, etc. but haven’t taken the time to upgrade my own skills.
I spend more time putting out fires than I do concentrating on the long range issues and the big picture.
I don't have
time to do all the critical things needed to run my business the way I’d
like.
Sometimes I wonder if I am both the arsonist and the fireman.
I’ve tried
delegating but I get poor results so I try to do most of it myself.
Sometimes I feel
like my work experience and education didn’t prepare me for all the
responsibilities of running a business.
I realize we
need to make some changes, I just don’t have the time or expertise.
We’re lacking in
planning and goal setting and we seem to get off track when we do.
What are your results, those of a TRUE entrepreneur or those of a skilled subject matter expert? The most successful business owners are those who have shifted from being a skilled subject matter expert to a successful TRUE entrepreneur—and 9 out of 10 have not made this shift on their own.
